Digital products are materials produced in digital format and distributed online. Its main objective is to add valuable content to the user who consumes it, whether it is composed of knowledge, entertainment, or even, in itself, the solution to a problem.

That means that e-books, videos, podcasts, websites and online courses, for example, are digital products; as well as appls, platforms and enterprise software, despite the difference in structure and complexity between them. At SoftDesign, we work with Software Development, which is the basis of the last three items mentioned here and, therefore, we will explain all the concepts in this article.

But first, it is worth remembering that digital business is not synonymous with digital product. A digital business is one that works primarily in the online environment, often being exclusive to that space. Thus, a digital business needs digital products to exist, as the latter will replace physical experiences. Nubank, for example, is a digital business, as it was created entirely for the online environment – it does not have physical branches like other banks.

Mobile App

An app is a computer program designed to process data electronically, aiming at solving problems and facilitating the execution of tasks by users. It is built with programming languages and specific for cell phones, and can be used on Android (Google) and/or iOS (Apple) operating systems.

The programming language that will be used to develop the app will define which devices it will be compatible with. Java and Kotlin are technologies for Android, for example; Objective C and Swift are iOS-specific; and React Native, Flutter and Ionic are hybrid technologies that make it possible to use the app on both operating systems.

The choice of the ideal language considers the problem the app solves, who will be its users, what is its expected growth (scalability), if it needs to be compatible with other languages, etc. It is also interesting to understand that most apps do not work alone: they need to be accompanied by a Server System (also called back-end), which is responsible for business rules and data storage.

An example of an application is WhatsApp. In it, messages sent between one user and another do not navigate directly from the sender’s cell phone to the recipient’s, they are sent to a server that then delivers the message to the users. That is, the data you have in your cell phone applications is probably also stored in the cloud, where the back-end of the applications you use is located.

Source: Whatsapp.

Enterprise Software

Enterprise Software is a set of elements that interact with one other. It is a network of interdependent components that work together to achieve a common goal.

In the context of digital products, enterprise software is a program that performs communication between computers and users. It is normal to call enterprise software CRM, ERP and other types of software that support the execution of management activities or organizational process flows.

To build enterprise software, many technologies can be used, in addition to different types of architectures. For example, today there is a great distinction between monolithic architectures (faster to build, but less scalable) and microservices architectures, where software parts are decoupled for better management, scalability and independence. In a microservices architecture, it is even possible for several technologies to coexist, each one acting where it is most needed.

Source: HubSpot

Software Platform

A software platform is an online environment with various functionalities that connects different users, promoting valuable interactions. Usually, it is the realization of a business model that exists exclusively in that space.

The platform can be considered a special type of app / enterprise software, which gets its name because the greatest value is not in the platform, but in the interactions it enables. Uber is an example of a digital platform, as it serves to connect people with available cars (drivers) to people who need to go from one place to another (passengers).

Within this idea of enabling interactions, platforms can connect people, but they can also connect software and hardware, which leads us to the growth of APIs (direct connection interfaces between software). Thus, a platform is generally an environment that facilitates access to things (people, software and hardware) that would be difficult to access without it, also enabling the easy connection of new elements.

In the universe of platforms, we use the same technologies as for apps / enterprise software, but, as the business model here generally provides for scale, there is a preference for microservices architectures. Also, remember that a platform is often made up of many parts: applications for users; web systems for other users and for the back office; back-end system to concentrate business rules and storage; and also APIs to facilitate the connection of new partners or elements to the platform.

Source: Uber

Everything is Software

As mentioned, apps, platforms and enterprise software are digital products based on software. Software is a sequence of codes that are written to be received and deciphered by computers and their components, in order to perform numerous tasks. At SoftDesign, they are created by Product Teams.

These digital products have been gaining more and more attention from corporates, as they are essential in digital transformation strategies. After all, in an increasingly connected world, they are responsible for creating connections between people, software and hardware, automating processes, facilitating activities and solving problems.

Miotec develops healthcare software, biomedical, and virtual reality equipment. In the market for twenty years, the company was founded to help professionals who deal with human development and find it difficult to measure information and make decisions.

Its main healthcare software is an electromyography sensor that quantifies information from muscle data. The sensor captures the electrical activity of the muscles, both contraction and relaxation, and presents such data to the health professional.

To boost innovation to its product, in 2019, Miotec joined forces with SoftDesign to create Mioflux, a piece of equipment connected to the electromyography sensor capable of measuring urinary volume and flow. The goal is to support pelvic physiotherapists in the treatment of children with urinary difficulties, people in the postoperative period, and adults with voiding disorders.

We spoke with Fabiano Ergoni, CEO & Founder of Miotec, to learn more about the challenges and achievements of this project. Watch the video below and learn about the history of Mioflux. Don’t forget to turn on the subtitles.

Why work with SoftDesign?

Miotec had an achilles heel: talent retention. The company set up internal hardware and healthcare software teams to develop its equipment. However, after a few months, the professionals ended up leaving the company and taking their knowledge about the products away.

Fabiano Ergoni, CEO and Founder of Miotec, understood that this problem should not be his and that, as an entrepreneur, he needed to dedicate himself to business objectives and to the launch of new products. When talking to SoftDesign, he felt safe with the company’s transparency:

“Osmar (A. M. Pedrozo – SoftDesign’s CEO) was able to listen to me and understand my vision of the future for Miotec. He didn’t want to sell me a ready-made product, he offered me a solution that could be expanded in the future, and warned me about the importance of making a conscious investment”.

A Creative Planning Process

With the partnership established, the first step was to start Product Inception a creative process that SoftDesign has been carrying out since 2016. Its purpose is to define the objectives of the project, plan the software development, and define the necessary investment.

Initially, the idea of Mioflux was quite broad: a healthcare software that could receive several applications and serve the most different types of hardware. But, through market research carried out with health professionals, it was possible to understand the actual pains and needs of the personas.

In this way, technical and design requirements were prioritized for the first MVP (Minimum Viable Product). SoftDesign’s team of Designers created the product prototypes, focusing on an easy and intuitive interface. The Product Manager, in partnership with the development team, focused on backlog estimates and release strategy.

Part of the Mioflux Conception. Source: SoftDesign.

Focus on Healthcare Software Development

While the Miotec team worked on the hardware, the SoftDesign team developed the healthcare software. A communication protocol was created in partnership, so the information transaction had the best performance.

The SoftDesign team opted for development with Electron, a multiplatform web technology; and used  React to create the interfaces. The visualization of the graphs was done in  D3.js, and its creation in real-time uses HTML5 associated with Canvas. The database chosen was NeDB, as it is lightweight and allows working with documents (exams).

Following the Agile Method, fortnightly meetings were held, in the sprint deliveries, for alignments and route corrections. Through the Jira tool, everyone was able to monitor the evolution and speed of work daily. According to Fabiano:

“All of this provided transparency, both for Soft’s managers and for us, the project’s investors. So it was possible to fix problems quickly, and we achieved our goal. The product is already on the market and we have received many compliments”.

Mioflux feature. Source: SoftDesign.

The Future of Mioflux

The Mioflux is a kind of scale, with a measuring cup, connected to the electromyography sensor (hardware). When the patient urinates in this equipment, it measures the time for the first drop to fall, the volume, and the urinary flow; and transmits this data to the system (software).

With this information, the physiotherapist prescribes the appropriate treatment, which can often be performed with the aid of Mioflux. This is because the equipment also has a visual biofeedback: a screen with colored circles that the patient can follow to learn to relax or contract the pelvic muscle.

Hundreds of physiotherapists already have the equipment in their offices. In a constant dialogue with users, Miotec receives feedback and works on the evolution of the product.

The next step is to extend home care, as many people are not comfortable urinating in clinics. With that in mind, an application will be developed soon, which will enable the sending of information between the patient and the healthcare professional.

We will continue working together with Miotec to support the implementation of its manifesto: taking care of subjectivity through technology.

In the second article of the series on digital product teams, we will address the role of the Product Owner (PO) in the development journey. Our objective is to explain why it is important to have a person focused on product management, and the great impact of this work on the team’s results. To this end, we gathered the most frequently asked questions of our customers and talked to our experts.

Namely: in the first article of this series, which you can check out here, we broadly explore all the profiles, roles and knowledge needed in a product team. In addition to the Product Owner, in the next articles we will talk about the role of Designers, Developers and Testers.

Why do we need a Product Person?

When we work in the construction of a digital product, we are dealing with complexity. We start with (1) a vision of where we want to go (usually a little vague), (2) a handful of market information, (3) a certain idea of our customers’ needs, and (4) a limited budget and time. All of this in addition to the mission to deliver maximum value to customers and users.

Amid this complexity, you have to make countless daily decisions about what to do, how to do it and when to do it. The Product Person can then be seen as someone who understands the constraints of the business (money, time, legal, processes, etc.), and acts to prioritize the team’s work strategically, maximizing the value delivered.

Usually, the creators or sponsors of the business believe they can play this role. However, our experience and modern product development methods show that it is best to have someone specific on the team who masters the techniques in the area and has experience in digital products. This does not mean that the role of creators and sponsors is unnecessary: the Product Person will be in frequent touch with them, jointly co-creating the strategic vision – but will also carry out other activities that require more time and focus.

“We can say, from the experience of several cases we have seen, that without a good Product Person, there is a lot of wasted time and money. The allocated team builds a lot of software, but without connection to a larger strategy. In these cases, it is not uncommon to have to throw a lot of things away and start over from scratch, because what was built works, but it doesn’t meet the needs”, Karina Hartmann, Head of Product and Innovation, points out.

What does a Product Person do?

In the market, there are two main nomenclatures for the role of those who work with products: Product Owner (PO) and Product Manager (PM). In some companies, these roles are performed by the same person; in others, they are divided; and there are still those that have only the first role.

At SoftDesign, the Product Person takes on the responsibilities of Product Owner and Product Manager.

As a Product Manager, the main responsibilities are:

Articulating the product vision;

Supporting the company in creating a product strategy that is connected to the company’s overall strategy, using knowledge about the market and users as a basis;

Creating, maintaining and communicating a product roadmap – which is a visual description that shows how the product will evolve over time – that represents this strategy;

Aligning the roadmap with the company’s constraints (money, time, etc.);

Thinking of ways to reduce risks and uncertainties as early as possible through testing, experimentation or research;

Feeding the roadmap based on product metrics;

Interacting with other areas that need to be coordinated (sales, marketing, support, operations) to align processes, pass on knowledge, among other actions.

As Product Owner, which is a role of the Scrum method, the main responsibilities are:

Prioritizing the work that will be done by the team in each Sprint in order to deliver maximum results and achieve the roadmap’s objectives;

Identifying solution options for each roadmap objective, choosing the best one based on testing, research or other data sources;

Refining each solution chosen, writing the user stories that will be the basis for development.

From the list above, we can see that this is not simple work. To achieve this, it is necessary to understand the various stakeholders in the product and integrate their views into a cohesive strategy.

Bruna Ricardo, one of SoftDesign’s Product People, values this aspect a lot. For her, her main challenge in a digital product team is to strategically connect all the ends, considering the different objectives of each stakeholder. “The main challenge of my role is to move between different scenarios, connecting stakeholders: customer, development team, and end user. I need to bring everyone into the same world and make these people happy with what is being developed”, she says.

Moreover, for Daniel Olsson, who also works with products at SoftDesign, “the presence of the Product Owner is crucial because, while the company assumes the role of caring about the business, the PO focuses on the product, managing efforts to make it a success. We do this while verifying the user and the market, saving the entrepreneur’s time so that he can focus on strategic and administrative decisions”, he emphasizes.

What is the daily life of a Product Person like?

Working on a team that uses the Scrum method, this person will have to perform the Product Owner’s functions, so in this person’s schedule we will find:

Participation in Planning; a planning meeting that takes place at the beginning of each Sprint. In it, the PM explains the objective of that work cycle and the team plans what is necessary to achieve it;

Conducting the Review, when the team collects feedback on what has been done in the Sprint;

Maintenance, update and prioritization of the backlog, which is the list of everything that needs to be done;

Daily availability to help the team with questions and decisions.

However, going beyond Scrum, the PO also needs to organize the following in his schedule:

Frequent conversations with stakeholders, which are the various areas involved in the product, such as Business, Marketing and Sales: the objective is to understand the expectations and constraints that each one brings to the project;

Market studies, to keep the PO’s understanding up to date on the positioning and differentiators of the product under construction;

Collecting data about users, including Analytics, and also conducting user surveys with the support of Designers (interviews, observation, usability tests);

Identification of opportunities based on the data collected;

Analysis of solution ideas, which usually includes the creation of workflows and prototypes, in addition to discussions with the entire team;

Testing solutions before building, which includes planning and running experiments that reduce the risk of investing in a bad solution;

Assembling a roadmap and frequently aligning these goals with all those involved, reconciling it with the expectations and constraints of the business and with the frequent changes in the scenario or in the company’s strategy.

Product Person Artifacts. Source: Own image.

What should a Product Person profile look like?

According to Marty Cagan, author of the best-selling book Inspired, the person needs to be very talented as well as smart, creative and persistent. After all, the work requires the ability to navigate from strategic to operational, bringing together business, design and technology. According to Michele Machado, who works with products at SoftDesign, a Product Owner needs to speak eye-to-eye with the stakeholders (discussing what is best for the business) as well as with the technical team (defining what is a priority and possible solutions).

To act in this role, it is not necessary to master the technical part, as would be the case with a person who has been a programmer, for example. In Cagan’s view, it needs to be someone who is curious about solutions and not afraid to participate in discussions about them. This means that technical people, without communication and negotiation skills, are a recipe for failure. “I think that just understanding about technology doesn’t make a product work; it is also necessary to connect ideas and people”, Bruna highlights.

SoftDesign’s Product Owners

In our work process, the profile we call Product Owner accumulates both the strategic vision (Product Management) and the day-to-day operational vision of Scrum. These people participate in the Product Conception and also in the life cycle of Software Development.

If you’re creating a new digital business, rarely you don’t have competition. Most businesses already arrive in markets full of direct and indirect competitors, and the best-known business models are widely copied: products like ‘Uber for veterinarians’, ‘Marketplace for services’ and ‘Airbnb for offices’ are born every day.

As if the fact of being in a market full of competitors were not enough, there is still another problem: your product is starting now, and it will compete with products that have been used for ten years and that are much more mature than you.

Therefore, in this article, we will discuss some strategies that can help your digital business work in the market, despite the challenges.

Competing in the Digital Market

Let’s say you saw an opportunity in the market and decided to create a new delivery or transportation app. You plan a Minimum Viable Product, and you intend to take this MVP to market, to find out about the acceptance of your product.

However, when you look at your MVP, you compare it to the market leaders. You compare your delivery app with iFood or your transportation app with Uber. In this comparison, you get the feeling that you’re far behind. You’ve worked in an MVP for two or three months, and you don’t even have half of the leader’s features. How are we going to launch? Should we continue developing?

Well, first you should know that this is not a realistic comparison. You can’t expect to enter the market, in a few months, and face a leader who started a journey years ago, received millions of dollars of investment, and has a team of hundreds of professionals. At the same time, you can’t get where they are if you don’t start your business somewhere.

It’s time to remember why you made an MVP. The objective was to test whether your unique value proposition had market appeal. That is if you managed to create a product idea that can find customers, even though it is inferior to the leaders in several aspects such as features, time in the market, or brand relevance.

Now you must be asking yourself: What do you mean by inferior? What do you mean by unique value proposition?

Creating an inferior product is also a strategy

Have you ever heard of the theory of disruptive innovation? It was proposed by Clayton Christensen in the 1990s. For the author, market-leading products tend to exceed the needs of some segments, while ignoring others, thus creating the space for new market entrants to create disruption. For example, iFood is likely leaving some type of restaurant unattended, and Uber certainly doesn’t serve all types of passengers.

Furthermore, according to the Ambiguity Zone theory, when leading products reach a certain threshold, they are stuck in incremental improvements and are no longer able to create new things that truly innovate their offering to the market. For example, Uber and iFood release frequent updates, but we rarely see them revolutionize the business itself.

Disruptive innovation is the process by which a smaller company with fewer resources can challenge established companies and businesses. The disruptor starts with a very specific focus on a slice or niche of the market that has a need not met by the leader – for example, a type of passenger who is unwilling or unable to use Uber for some reason.

The disruptor will try out their solution in that specific niche, and since this was underserved, the product will be very well accepted even if it is generally inferior to the leading product. That is, for a niche that was not served, it does not matter if the product has all the features that the leader has, or if it has the same performance, what matters to users is that they finally have a product aligned with their profile.

Another advantage is that being a smaller and simpler product allows it, in most cases, to be cheaper, so the product has two advantages at the same time: it serves a niche that was not served and it has an attractive price. In its niche, the product will start to earn revenue, and thus buy the time it needs to mature so that over time, disruptors can stand up to leaders in other niches, or even in the general market.

Eventually, the disruptor’s offering can become so good, and so much more innovative than the leader’s incremental improvements, that people end up migrating to the disruptor product, effectively dethroning the leader.

Blue Ocean and Red Ocean

For Kim and Mauborgne, some markets are red oceans, and others that are blue. In red oceans, all competitors are fighting for the same customers and everyone ends up losing, as this competition leads to pressure to reduce prices and loss of profits, hence the analogy to “bleed”, coloring the ocean red.

The blue ocean is where you swim freely, with more space and without constant battles with competitors. For the authors, some factors that help create a blue ocean include:

Using data to create your digital business (data-driven);

Finding a gap in the market, looking for overlooked profiles and public needs;

Considering the functional and emotional motivations of your audience;

Presenting differentiation and low cost at the same time;

Maximizing opportunities and minimizing risks by experimenting and validating your business ideas as early as possible.

It is easy to see that the disruptive innovation discussed above is fully aligned with the idea of creating a blue ocean!

The Secret is in the Product Positioning

Competing in the red ocean is never a good idea, regardless of whether you are a large or small company, have a mature product or are still in the making, and have financial resources or not.

To escape the open sea, your initial and main focus, the basis of all work on your product, is to position yourself in your market. Understand product positioning as the definition of your ocean. You have product positioning if you know:

What is it you’re offering, in detail?

Who are you specifically offering it to? Who will buy it and who will use it? and

How is it different from competitors?

There is a crucial issue in the answer to these questions: they need to be specific. If I ask you about Nespresso, maybe your first answer is that it’s in the coffee market, and the audience is people who like coffee. Now put it in perspective: Nespresso and Nescafé are both in the coffee market but they don’t offer “coffee”. Each has a unique offer for a specific audience. It affects everything else: the product, the packaging, the brand, the communication, etc.

If you don’t know how to answer these questions specifically and clearly, we can’t tell if you’re in the blue sea, the red sea, or in a kiddie pool full of rubber ducks. You are sailing aimlessly.

Defining the product positioning in a Blue Ocean strategy

You need to first find an underserved niche, with a latent demand, that has a specific problem and think of a product that fits like a glove in that segment. When thinking about this product, you need to be clear about its uniqueness, its differentials to the competition, and the indirect solutions that the market offers.

In addition, you can’t just trust your intuition or your reading of reality. It is necessary to test if the product really “fits like a glove” for that niche and problem that you focused on (product-market fit), which is why you will create an MVP. Remember this: you don’t create an MVP to get to market right away, or to use your product partially. The reason to create an MVP is to test your unique value proposition with early adopters in your niche.

Surely, your MVP will be simple, and it’s normal for you to wonder how you’re going to take a product to the market that is inferior to the current leader but remember: your niche won’t see him as inferior. In this underserved niche, your MVP is already better than the other options on the market because it offers something that the leaders don’t. That’s what we call a unique value proposition!

If you’re not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’ve launched too late (Reid Hoffman).

Also, remember that an MVP is not intended to be a great product that everyone will like. It is a temporary product, with which you will learn a few things from the first users. If the MVP demonstrates that your unique value proposition is interesting for this niche, you keep investing and evolving the product, either to make it more complete and with a better experience that can reach more users, or to gradually include other niches.

In addition to testing your product positioning with an MVP, you’ll still have to think about how to communicate it. You need to be able to talk to your specific niche and make people see that your value proposition is consistent with that niche’s underserved needs. Therefore, MVP positioning and testing are subjects that involve both product and business strategy as well as product marketing.

What if my product positioning is inside the red ocean?

If you can’t define or choose a niche, nor can you find a specific problem that is being overlooked by competitors, you’re swimming in a red ocean.

When your value proposition is not unique, you are competing directly with the leading products in your segment and you will need to invest much more to be able to enter the market and try to “steal” users for your product.

It’s not impossible, but consider that this is a much more expensive path, both product-wise and marketing-wise. You will need to reach the market with a product that is compatible in terms of functionality and still invest a lot more in customer acquisition to convince users who are already used to a product to migrate to another that is similar. You will have to enumerate competitive differentials for users to convince themselves to make this migration.

You will also have more difficulty finding people interested in investing in your business, as you cannot explain your differentiator, nor estimate what market share you intend to conquer.

How we help with your product positioning

Here at SoftDesign, we discuss product positioning strategically and with a product marketing bias during Product Conception. We bring market data and facilitate the process so that you can define the market positioning you want to test.

With the Experimentation service, we help you test your unique value proposition and get an indication of whether it seems to have market acceptance. Finally, we help you develop your functional MVP, and launch and test it in the market, bringing you the information you will need to decide whether to persist or pivot the business.

Come and talk to us about blue oceans and disruptive innovations!

Choosing the right time to make decisions is one of the most important factors in our lives. There are those who believe that intuition and experience are the best allies in these moments, while others take action only after analyzing data and information in detail. Nevertheless, timing plays a crucial role in personal and professional relationships and generates a significant impact on business and results. The same is true for launching a digital product — that is why time-to-market (TTM) is so relevant.

In order to bring some perspectives, we will share some insights about time-to-market in this article. It is important to emphasize that consolidating concepts is not the main objective of this content since the topic raises discussions. What we present below are contributions that help us to reflect on the ideas that permeate this debate.

Exploring Concepts

Time-to-market is much more than a buzzword headlining the universe of startups and digital businesses. In its most consolidated meaning, the expression represents the time span between the conception of the product and its launch on the market. This time is relative and varies from industry to industry, that is, the success of the strategy depends on a number of factors related to the business.

TTM can also be interpreted as the time between the start of the team’s work and the first sale. With this in mind, it is essential to consider that some product and service development strategies depend on time to achieve a competitive advantage. In these specific cases, the longer we take to launch, the less market share, revenue, and competitiveness we will have.

Launch time doesn’t always have to be as fast as possible. In this race to enter the market first, it is essential not to lose sight of the quality standard, that is, the reduction of time-to-market should not be pursued at any cost. Seeking competitive advantage through quick feedback collections is the best way to improve the product with agility and excellence.

Furthermore, by optimizing Software Development and product marketing processes, we reduced launch time. As a result, we gained more market share, as well as customer and user loyalty. Remember, being the first to explore the blue ocean may result in a higher profit margin than the competition.

How to measure time-to-market?

According to John Carter, author of Innovate Products Faster: Graphical Tools for Accelerating Product Development, the first step is to know what you are measuring and why. It is possible to measure the period (months or years) it takes to bring a concept to market, or the working hours of the people involved in the project, for example. In some cases, companies start timing when the team and budget are approved. However, in other situations timing starts weeks later. Therefore, it is essential to define when the project starts and ends.

Carter recommends two-time measurements:

The “clock is triggered” when the team is available and there is an initial definition (and the main risks are taken out),

The “clock is stopped” when an MVP or the first version of the product is sold (or adopted), usually after the product is launched.

However, for the specialist, comparing TTM between teams or organizations requires some care. “The biggest factors that can influence time-to-market are the scope of the project, how much risk it contains, and how much innovation is needed to differentiate the product from the competition. Time-to-market comparisons are not accurate unless you understand when the timer starts and stops, and you understand the risk profile between the two projects.”

In the article The Return Map: Tracking Product Teams, Charles H. House and Raymond L. Price point out that a study carried out by McKinsey reports that, on average, companies lose 33% of their profit when they launch products six months late, compared with 3.5% losses when they spend more than 50% on product development. “Increasingly, companies are learning that the time required to develop a product has more influence on its success than its costs”, they point out.

Time: a 21st-century luxury

We are often surprised by amazing and revolutionary products, but which are often made available to the market at the wrong time. For this reason, a significant portion of startups dies within the first year. An early launch can result in problems that are difficult to overcome, such as a poor product or poor service quality. However, launching too late can create a disadvantage that is difficult to reverse.

Time-to-market is important because a delay in launch fragments the market you intend to sell your product or service. This affects the company’s profitability and decreases market share, undermining the cost structure. The first to market a completely new product guarantees a good percentage of market share.

How to do it faster and better?

We live in a world with significant and constant changes regarding technology and business. The ability to adapt ideas and solutions to scenarios is a reality that companies need to deal with in order to remain in a competitive market.

Technologies have evolved to support these changes, by creating platforms that streamline software development processes, as an alternative for presenting a result capable of meeting expectations quickly and assertively.

One such platform is No-Code, which is very similar to Low-Code, covered recently in an article on our blog. Despite being aligned for similar purposes, these platforms have differences in their applicability and target audience.

What is No-Code?

In a literal translation, No-Code means delivering an application entirely without code, or without the need to use code and programming language. The main idea behind No-Code is to decouple the need for a developer when designing a product, making maintenance easier and more accessible.

Bringing the idea of templates that can be chosen, flows that can be defined and reports that can be customized through an intuitive interface, No-Code allows people with no programming knowledge to quickly customize and define a functional system.

No-Code X Low-Code

While Low-Code decreases the need for a developer’s interference to create a product, No-Code dismisses the use of the developer, leaving the creation in charge of people who do not have knowledge in software development, but in business, marketing, and design.

Each of the platforms has a different target audience: No-Code targets business users, while Low-Code focuses on developers who can create interconnected applications faster. When using No-Code, all the technical part is abstracted and although it is still applicable for a few cases, it makes usage easier.

Advantages of No-Code

Productivity for the team: Professionals who know the rules of the business can support the creation of the product. The intervention of a professional in the area of software development is not necessary to make adjustments to the application. Thus, any professional can collaborate with the product conception process.

Adaptable projects: Adapting changes and testing new versions of the application is simpler. With clear rules and ready-made components, it is possible to switch between different options quickly and in a testable manner.

Cost reduction: With the use of No-Code, the need for the involvement of many professionals is reduced. As a result, the costs to create a functional product are lower and the response time for validation is reduced.

Autonomy for the company: Due to the platform’s ease of use, it is possible for any professional to carry out validations of ideas and tests, putting improvements and changes into practice without having to implement a lengthy process.

Disadvantages of No-Code

It is not all roses in this future that don’t require the intervention of developers, however. Despite being a platform that opens possibilities for professionals from other areas to create functional applications, No-Code is limited to the functionalities implemented by the platform.

Imagine that No-Code allows us to create a car capable of driving around town, opening the windows, and filling it up. However, we cannot define whether the lights will automatically turn off when we turn off the vehicle, whether the fuel cap is internal or whether we will have fog lights. We are able to build a car that only performs certain functions. Customizations that are more specific require the intervention of a developer, in addition to the use of another platform that allows such changes.

The future is just around the corner

According to projections of FutureScape, in 2021 the IT market (during and after the pandemic) will have to deliver ever faster, responding to changing requirements and scenarios. In addition, it will have to serve an increasingly broad audience. This projection demonstrates the need for companies to adapt their business to a universe with different opportunities and challenges. To this end, new tools appear.

In this panorama, technologies that accelerate product conception processes stand out and gain relevance. No-Code together with Low-Code emerges as valuable tools to support this ever-changing landscape. When we think about ways to deliver results with less effort, we are actually thinking about how to adapt solutions quickly and correctly.

The State of Agile annual report for 2020, informs that companies are looking for three main goals when seeking new methodologies: accelerate delivery, manage and prioritize change, and increase productivity. With that in mind, we can see that tools that speed up processes and mitigate errors are a trend now. Therefore, No-Code fits perfectly in this aspect.

Does No-Code work for my business?

In order to answer this question, you first need to structure the digital product. Both a new application or system as well as the evolution of a platform need to be well-thought-out and planned before choosing the best form of development. It is very likely that No-Code may come to represent part of a larger strategy during the roadmap of your product or digital business.

To assist in this process, we offer Product Conception, a service that aims to elaborate the idea of the digital product, understanding the problem it solves, who its users are, and what technology is suitable for it.
Exploring ideas, better understanding users, identifying features and choosing technologies. These are some steps covered in SoftDesign’s Digital Product Conception: a service capable of helping startups and consolidated companies in the development of a digital product or service, understanding the problem it solves and how it generates value. Design Thinking and The Lean Startup are some of the approaches that help us think about these solutions, looking at the business model and applying knowledge of design, agility and technology.

Over the past eight years, we have carried out more than 300 product conceptions for businesses in different markets, such as Financial, Health, Agribusiness, Insurance and Real Estate. With these partners, we conceived solutions for Platforms, SaaS (Software as a Service), Marketplaces, among others.

But, after all, why did these partners choose to do Product Conception with SoftDesign? We know that each product conception process is unique. Therefore, we work through a multidisciplinary method, with teams composed of professionals who have academic and market experience. We work with the client thinking about the digital solution in a comprehensive way, considering methodologies, financial feasibility and users.

Organized Schedule

SoftDesign’s Product Conception is four weeks long. To keep the schedule organized, we suggest clients have weekly meetings at the same time and day of the week. It is not only the meetings that are previously planned but the topics that will be covered during the meetings are also shared with clients at the beginning of the process.

Nonetheless, Karina Hartmann, Product Manager at SoftDesign, emphasizes that the work is flexible, as each client has different needs, availability and analysis times.

Product Conception is a creative process. Therefore, sometimes we need more time to mature ideas and prototypes. We carry out all the steps in a very calm and safe way so that the client understands that there is a certain logic, even if we are open to adjustments during the process when necessary.

Collaboration Culture

If you have already hired any service, you have certainly faced moments of doubts and questions: will the knowledge we have been considered by the company hired? What about the strategies we have already thought of? Is there room for our concerns? Will we really be heard throughout the process? At SoftDesign, we have a collaborative and co-creation culture. Therefore, our clients and partners do not hire specialists who will deliver a ready-made solution.

What we provide is a facilitator who has techniques, methods, knowledge of the market, and of previous projects, capable of assisting in the creation of the product. “There is a lot of room for listening and speaking in SoftDesign’s Product Conception process. Our role as specialists is to present data and defend points of view and strategies, but the client has complete freedom to propose other solutions and paths. The decision will always be up to the entrepreneur”, Karina highlights.

We currently organize four co-creation and debate meetings, each using different techniques. The first ones are inserted in the universe of Design Thinking and the others are part of the UX Design universe. In in-person meetings, we used a whiteboard and post-it notes in a Design and Co-creation Room. In virtual meetings, we use Miro – an online platform for building group ideas. “The co-creation process in Product Conception takes place in many ways and each person can collaborate in their own way, as the main objective is to open space for the exchange of opinions in a democratic environment, with the capacity to generate value for the business”.

Multidisciplinary Method

SoftDesign’s Digital Product Conception brings together qualified professionals from the product, design and programming areas. The team works through a multidisciplinary method that encompasses knowledge and techniques from various subjects: Design Thinking, User Research, UX Design, Prioritization, Product Strategy and Launch.

“Our professionals are focused on answering questions holistically. We consider ourselves multidisciplinary because our method does not only look at the area of interface design, nor only at the areas of experience design, business, revenue model, or technology. The method used in SoftDesign’s Product Conception combines all these areas to build a solution that makes sense and has a reason to exist”, Karina emphasizes.

During Product Conception, we often find that the client may already have a prototype, but that does not mean that he has an understanding of the business as a whole. Thus, this customized methodology helps the client to understand how he will make money with the product, who his target audience is and how the payment method of his business will work, for example.

According to SoftDesign’s Product Manager, Design Sprint is considered an inspiration for SoftDesign’s Product Conception, but when tested it did not work as well as the one-week-spaced meeting model. “To create the Product Conception service, we tested several sources, references and methods, with the objective of adopting a methodology that would work well for startups and consolidated companies that want to innovate. We developed our own way of doing it, in an educational way and with more space to absorb knowledge and information”.

In addition, Karina highlights that Design Sprint has a list of determined processes and activities. On the other hand, in SoftDesign’s Product Conception, the goal is to be more flexible: if a client has an idea that is still very immature, we invest more time in ideation; if the idea is more mature, but the client has little contact with the market, more time is spent on research or; if the client already has contact with the market, has a mature idea, but has no prior knowledge of technology, more time is invested in technological issues. “This flexibility in SoftDesign’s Product Conception is one of our differentiators. We act on the client’s issues in a personalized and customized way. We do not follow a standard sprint model”.

The six main steps of SoftDesign’s Digital Product Conception.

Learning for Other Projects

SoftDesign’s Product Conception provides unique learning about the business, as it uses Agile Methods and Design Thinking to co-create. Thus, during the work meetings, clients learn in-depth about their own business, industry and competition, as everyone’s participation drives an environment for exchanging knowledge and experiences through collaborative Discovery processes. “For some people, this collaborative mindset can be considered a culture shock, but once these subjects come into practice, it becomes easier to absorb knowledge and new techniques”, Karina explains.

Watch the video below to learn more about the lessons learned by an entrepreneur during Product Conception with SoftDesign:

Project Risk Reduction

We realized that it is increasingly necessary to understand the reason why to develop a product, without leaving the business vision aside. With this in mind, we started to practice even more empathy with clients who come to SoftDesign to create digital products and services. Reducing risks is an important objective, but we are dealing with a challenge that is not binary: there is a subjective universe that makes it difficult to point out closed “yes-or-no” answers.

For Karina, this is one of the reasons why the research step is so important since through this step it is possible to discover whether the elaborated premises are true or false.

When we present data, we can help entrepreneurs choose the path that makes the most sense. We do not work on Product Conception as a way to sell software; our focus is on the design of the product or service. We are completely honest about the project’s risks and feasibility.

In SoftDesign’s Product Conception, what we do is a survey of data that will help the entrepreneur in his decision-making process. “We are very transparent and if we understand that there are risks and uncertainties, we emphasize this information to the client. We use the SWOT Analysis to check if the idea is strong enough to prosper in the market, or if the best option is to pivot and migrate to a new possibility”.

Karina also highlights the importance of keeping in mind that to explore issues of Market Fit and for more in-depth risk reduction, it is necessary to test a real product, in the real market. “Our Product Conception is different from other solutions precisely because we are not only focused on developing software, but also on developing experiments and MVPs – able to help test the Product-Market Fit”, Karina concludes.

Expected Results of Product Conception

Value Proposition is essential to start software development, seek investment or align the solution with other areas. Furthermore, it is important as it clarifies the motivation for the solution. The definition of features is also part of this process, as drawing up a list of requirements helps to measure estimates so that the development team can start building the product or service.

Another important result is the choice of technology, which must consider criteria such as business strategy and compatibility with technologies already in use. Finally, we have a construction strategy, which consists of prioritizing items and planning releases that allow the intelligent use of investments to gather feedback and improve time-to-market.

In an increasingly digital market, it is common to find customers with great ideas for digital products but with no financial means to put them into practice. In these cases, Low-Code Development presents itself as an alternative because it can reduce development costs in configuration, implementation, and maintenance.

You might be wondering: but if it’s cheaper, why aren’t all digital products designed that way? The logic works similarly to the automobile market, for example: you can buy an economy car, with manual transmission and without air conditioning, and it will still take you from point A to point B. However, with a luxury car, with automatic transmission, leather seats, and airbags, the experience of going from point A to point B is quite different, isn’t it?

It all depends on the purpose of your business and the digital product. Low-Code Development is indicated for the rapid validation of innovative products (Lean Startup) – which will later be evolved or recreated – and to meet the specific needs of data and processes in consolidated companies.

What is Low-Code?

Low-Code is a way of creating software that uses graphical interfaces instead of code. In other words, it is as if instead of programming a solution, you just “configure” it from a series of options pre-programmed by someone else.

The term was first used in 2014 at Forrester Research – an American consulting company. It denoted platforms with development interfaces based on Graphical User Interface (GUI). Since then, the model has been improved, and today it is the basis for many marketing solutions, digital presence, and even for some types of simple applications.

Since it requires little or no coding, Low-Code allows developers with varying levels of experience to build websites and small systems or apps, based on template-driven design, automatic code generation, and visual programming. In fact, some platforms created this way have become so famous that there are now professionals specialized in their use. These professionals, despite not knowing how to code, have perfected themselves in configuring such tools and providing simpler digital solutions.

How Low-Code is this solution?

The truth is that when we talk about Low-Code solutions, there are different levels, that is, different requirements for the ability to write code.

For example, if you want to make a simple website, you can use a tool like Wix, WordPress, or Gator. You enter the website, fill in some information, choose a ready-made template and change only the necessary information, all in a visual way. So far, no code has been used.

However, maybe you want to do something a little more custom, like styling your visual template of choice or creating some integration. In this case, you need code knowledge to go beyond the options given by the tool.

Advantages of Low-Code

As we mentioned before, one of the main advantages of Low-Code Development is the reduction of development costs, but we can also mention other benefits, such as:

Fast learning curve: the model requires less coding knowledge and is considered simpler than traditional programming languages;

Speed: development time can be reduced due to the dispensability of creating manual codes;

Adding custom code: it is possible to add extra features to meet specific needs if necessary;

Mobile accessibility: the model has a feature pattern that works for different devices, making it unnecessary to program different software.

Disadvantages of Low-Code

Like any other development model, Low-Code has some points that deserve attention and should be considered on a case-by-case basis, such as:

Security and compliance: Low-Code solutions are not security-conscious and may be seriously vulnerable to attacks. Never use such a solution to handle sensitive user data!

Scalability: this type of platform is not suitable for a large scale, that is, if the number of users increases, for example, it may be necessary to rebuild the product in a more robust technology;

Customization capabilities: in order to be easy to use, these platforms are generally quite limited; they feature a specific set of pre-programmed options where you choose which one to use. On some platforms, there is no possibility of customization which makes it impossible to evolve the product or create a differentiated user experience. Other tools allow for customization but require as much coding as writing custom software.

Variety of digital products: the use of this model for the development of platforms for corporate use is questioned, as it may require a greater number of digital products in the same company since each one would meet a specific objective.

Does Low-Code work for my business?

In order to answer this question, you first need to structure the digital product. Both a new application or system as well as the evolution of a platform need to be well-thought-out and planned before choosing the best form of development. It is very likely that Low-Code may come to represent part of a larger strategy during the roadmap of your product or digital business.

To assist in this process, we offer Product Conception, a service that aims to elaborate the idea of the digital product, understanding the problem it solves, who its users are, and what technology is suitable for it.
Over the past few years, the area of Information Technology has developed substantially: it has evolved from being exclusively linked to programming to being strategically linked to innovation. It means that IT is now essential to develop innovative products and services and to perform the digital transformation that businesses need to cope with the changing market trends. Have all IT companies reached this level?

They actually haven’t. Some outdated software companies still work on projects with fixed scope and only deliver enterprise software and platforms resulting from comprehensive programming. They are IT companies with no product vision and no continuity. Each project is seen to be simple: it needs to meet the customer’s demand, no matter the user’s opinion, the market fit, or the volatility of the current context.

To keep you from partnering with one of these stuck-in-time partners, in this article we list the four must-have characteristics of your IT partner. That way, you can count on the technological assistance you need to meet the challenges of the 2020s.

1. Digital Product View

Your IT partner needs to be more than just a programming company. It needs to have a vision (view) of the digital product which means to have expertise in Design and Experimentation.

The Design process allows us to think about the product from the user’s perspective. Suppose you develop an app, software enterprise, or platform that people don’t need, don’t understand, or can’t use. The thinking approach used by designers and their toolkit makes us look for a deeper and more realistic understanding of the problem we want to solve, before starting to develop the solution.

The gain resulting from this practice is to be able to build higher quality products that can provide optimal user interactions, high user acceptance, and effectively meet user needs and expectations. In other words: when we say Design, we mean designing the functional aspect of the product so that it works as expected.

But Design alone is not enough. Even thinking about the digital product from the user’s perspective, we can only be sure that we are on the right track through Experimentation. No matter how many surveys and interviews are conducted, it is only useful information to guide us. To define the product is to state a proposition, a solution hypothesis.

In order to discover and learn whether the user experience and the proposed business model work effectively, it is necessary to test it as quickly and efficiently as possible. This is what the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is for. The famous product-solution-fit and product-market fit can only be achieved through experimentation and adaptation.

Of course, it is possible to develop software without using the services of Design and Experimentation. However, the risk of developing a useless product is high and may incur the greatest danger of all: a well-developed product that, in fact, should never have been made.

2. Dedicated Multidisciplinary Team

When looking for an IT partner, one of the most important questions you should ask is: Will I be served by a multidisciplinary dedicated team, or served on demand?

You may have heard that some IT companies treat their clients with no exclusivity. It is a work model in which your demand is served simultaneously with others’ by different professionals according to their availability. The results are over-due (late) deliveries, rework and little (if any) connection with your business.

A focused and dedicated multidisciplinary team ensures the harmony and evolution of the work. Software development is a process of knowledge sharing: it grows as the team learns more about the business and the client learns more about the product development. Moreover, this closely established relationship between them results in more approachable professionals and assigns certainty to the work.

“In our experience, we have run into problems that our clients face with partners who are not fully dedicated. There were cases where every week a new professional, unaware of what had already been developed, was assigned to attend the meeting because he had a free spot in his schedule. It is an evidence that the client is seen as just another one“, says Karina Hartmann, SoftDesign Product Manager.

3. Experience in Digital Projects

It may sound like grandpa talk, but it is the absolute truth. The IT partner must have experience in digital projects, which means knowing different technologies and the real advantages and disadvantages of applying their solutions in different usage scenarios.

Only with this background is it possible to indicate the most appropriate technology for each product, according to its specific demand. For example, a partner who is only familiar with Java will certainly recommend it to your project. In fact, this choice should be made more consciously, considering the business adequacy (fit) – responding to needs such as security, scalability, efficiency, and also business timing (MVP, Scale-Up, etc.).

In addition, experience in digital projects provides a wider repertoire of challenges and a significant understanding of technological recombination. Today, there are ready-made solutions that can be integrated, so there is no need to build everything from scratch. For example, your product needs a payment method: we can consider using existing software, and recombine this technology with what we have in mind for your product. This way we save money and the product can be launched quickly, which avoids missing time to market.

4. Innovation Facilitator

Last but not least, the IT partner must act as a facilitator of the innovation process within the organization. Speaking with companies from different markets, corporate departmentalization was reported as one of the most common pains (sources of stress). The larger the company, the more difficult communication becomes and, consequently, the harder it is to achieve digital innovation. Some department demands may not be taken as priorities by the IT team, and more, they may be seen as ‘task workers’ who provide support only on one-off issues.

The IT partner should bring in methods that help develop communication in the organization, as it is often the best way to facilitate innovation. There are ideas circulating in every organization; bringing them together to discover and understand the pains (sources of stress) is essential to facilitate the process of connecting and creating new solutions.

The IT partner must also continue to look outward and be responsible for providing the organization with new insights, inspiration and examples to bring in some fresh air to revitalize its structure. “Right now, for example, we are working with a financial client on a project that brings together people from Management, Innovation and Social Care, and from its many agencies across the country. After desk research (documentation search), we made a presentation of the existing initiatives related to the problem they intend to solve, asking the group to think about new digital products for their business,” says Karina.

Trust your IT partner

Digital product vision, dedicated multidisciplinary team, digital project experience, and innovation facilitator. These are the four must-have characteristics of your IT partner to have your trust and run your projects.

At SoftDesign, these skills are combined in the Product Conception. We work with the Design Thinking and Lean Startup approach that allows us to think globally about the digital solution, considering users, functions, market and financial viability. Similarly, these skills are combined in Software Development, with Discovery Cycles, short deliveries and user experience testing.

Brazil has been a stage for major startup events, one of which is The Gramado Summit. It is an event sponsored by SoftDesign among others, that takes place in southern Brazil and brings together entrepreneurs, investors, and consolidated companies for workshops, lectures, and networking.

In a recent interview with the Gramado Summit Portal, Osmar A. M. Pedrozo, CEO of SoftDesign talked about startups, the market, and the conception and development of digital products. See the full interview below, originally published in Portuguese at the Start Portal.

How does SoftDesign work with startups?

We are a technology hub with 23 years of experience in the software development market. We have served a large number of customers and carried out hundreds of projects for apps, platforms, and enterprise software. Our vast experience, knowledge, and expertise in designing and building digital products allow us to provide consistent support to new businesses.

When a startup comes to us, we first seek to identify the current state of the new business. If the process is in its early stage and there is an idea that needs refinement and structuring, we suggest the Product Conception service.

Using approaches like Design Thinking and Lean Startup, we assist the startup with the ideation process, exploring the problem to be solved, and creating hypotheses. We also carry out research, benchmarking, map journeys, identify personas, and design prototypes. All that to validate the effectiveness and market fit of the digital product and support the implementation of the Business Model.

If the startup’s development is in a more advanced stage, the product backlog is ready or an MPV (Minimum Viable Product) is already running, we can effectively assist it with Software Development. We suggest the most appropriate technologies and implement an agile development method. It implies having the startup or scale-up working with us on the daily as a true co-creation process. In this sense, due to our technology and market knowledge, risks are minimized.

There is a third situation where UX Design Consulting is required. Along the way, we have worked with startups that despite having a good product in the market, gathered negative feedback indicating problems with the product’s usability. Users complained about not having a positive experience using the digital product. Our team performs a heuristic analysis to identify improvement opportunities in that kind of situation.

To what extent is it important for a startup to carry out Product Conception before developing its digital product or service?

Product Conception helps to minimize problems and future expenses, as it assigns focus to the work and provides validation before the product enters the market. Many times startups come to us with good ideas, but with no understanding of the technological basis. We help them formatting the work so that it can be assessed in terms of acceptance.

As I say, Product Conception minimizes problems, but it doesn’t mean the success of the product is guaranteed. I am saying that the startup has already a lot of variables to deal with and our job is to give support on how things are done. The idea is spending energy on validating the product, and not on defining technology, business model, etc. When everything is well organized, it is easier to attract investors to the project.

Does SoftDesign somehow help to establish the relationship between startup and investor?

The process of structuring the idea, the pitch, ends up helping the startup/investor relationship for it inspires confidence. By seeing that the startup has a technology partner with a large market and IT experience, the investor feels safer to invest in and undertake the project. We have helped startups to make successful product presentations to investors invited to our head office. We can help ensure the digital product will be delivered accordingly, will be good, and will have the qualities needed to meet its objectives, be they of scalability, efficiency, or otherwise.

SoftDesign’s high investment in education and training contributes to keeping our teams always updated and constantly improving so as to ensure the development of qualified solutions.

You said before that the startup works with the team on the daily for developing software. How exactly does this process work?

We work with the Agile methodology, which is more adaptive. It allows improvements and even changes in the course of the project while it is being developed to incorporate feedback coming from the software end-user.

Decision-making becomes faster when the startup, or company, and the development team work together. For this purpose, we rely on a series of tools, from Product Conception to Software Development. It promotes transparency and visibility regarding the whole work process, the evolution of sprints and deliveries.

The startup knows exactly what is being done and how it is being done and follows everything in real-time, also participating in the meetings.

Are there any differences between working with startups and well-established companies? What are the advantages that make SoftDesign work with startups?

Small initiatives can greatly benefit from our vast knowledge of technology. The technologies used with large customers are similar to those used with startups.

We can say that the difference lies in the way of working, as the startup founder is usually quite involved with the product. In this way, he/she soon builds up a relationship of trust that leads to less bureaucratic decision-making. For us, it’s a great sense of accomplishment different from what happens with bigger projects of well-established companies. They usually take much longer to be effectively implemented.

Even more interesting is that is a two-way street: just as we bring our experience from well-established companies to startups, we apply our learning and the innovative spirit resulting from working with startups to well-established companies that need to renew, adapt, and transform digitally. It is very rewarding to promote this kind of exchange and learn a lot during the process.
